Grappling With Jonah
Following the publication of his book Bewilderment: A Spiritual Guide, Bishop Robert has offered to lead us in a deeper exploration of the Book of Jonah. The sessions will be held in Holy Trinity, starting at 10am, on three Wednesdays in September:
3rd The God who sends and the prayer of protest
10th Down and Out in Nineveh
17th Meeting the God of compassion and love
The course sessions will run from 10am until approximately 11.30am at Holy Trinity Bradford on Avon, with refreshments at the Community Café in Holy Trinity.
For all course enquiries and to sign up, please send a short email to: beneficeoffice@htboa.org with the email subject: Bewilderment – A Spiritual Guide – followed by your full name.
No previous knowledge is necessary, but if you have a Bible (any translation), please bring it with you.
We think of prophets as strong and confident figures, but Jonah is neither of these. In fact, he’s barely taken seriously at all and is crowded out of his own story by the whale that swallowed him up. Alone among the prophets, Jesus describes Jonah as a ‘sign’. But what does that mean, and does it have any relevance to us today? Come and find out.
Jonah offers much wisdom for our bewildered generation – one that grapples with anxiety, isolation, protest, anger, fear, and depression, all under the shadow of divine presence in the midst of personal turmoil. For those who feel unmoored, Jonah’s story becomes a surprising source of consolation. Ultimately, it maps the contours of grace – a grace that feels especially absent in today’s world.

Holy Trinity – New Concert & Recital Series
Opening Recital – Thursday, 25th September at 12.00pm
We’re delighted to announce the launch of a new series of concerts and recitals at Holy Trinity, featuring both local and visiting musicians.
The opening recital will take place on Thursday, 25th September at 12.00pm, with a Clarinet and Piano Recital given by The Revd Jenny Nelson, Rector of Bradford on Avon Holy Trinity, Westwood, and Wingfield, and pianist David Arkell.
Their programme will include works by Elgar, Finzi, Rutter, and other British composers, in an uplifting and reflective celebration of lyrical British music.
Before training for ordination, Jenny was a professional orchestral and chamber clarinettist, having studied at the Royal Academy of Music. Over a 20-year musical career, she performed extensively across the UK and internationally, including with the BBC, RPO, and the Royal Opera House, enjoying concerts, recordings, the BBC Proms, and overseas tours.
David Arkell studied at Durham University and has enjoyed a long career teaching both languages and music in a variety of educational settings. He is currently the organist and choral accompanist at Sherborne Girls’ School. A keen hillwalker and cyclist, David is also a published poet; his first collection, Divine Loves, was released in 2019.
Join us for this special lunchtime concert as we begin what promises to be a rich and inspiring new musical tradition at Holy Trinity. Retiring collection with all proceeds to the church.
Two further concert dates are scheduled for 30 October and 13 November with Martin Cooke.
Please join us on Thursday, 25th September at 12.00 pm, Holy Trinity.
