Springtime of the Heart

In the beginning, when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void, and darkness covered the face of the deep, while the Spirit of God swept over the face of the waters. We begin with the story of creation, not with an order already complete, but with God’s Spirit hovering over chaos, bringing forth life by grace. The springtime of the heart begins in much the same way: in God’s gentle, faithful work of renewal within us, moving us from spiritual winter toward new and abundant life.

We know what it is to feel formless and weary, as though winter has lingered too long. Yet God speaks again: “Let there be a dome in the midst of the waters.” God makes space for life to breathe and to grow. As daylight lengthens and creation stirs, soil loosens, buds swell, birds return to song, and we are reminded that winter’s tyranny and darkness do not endure. Spring declares to us that God is still making all things new.

As this new season unfolds, the Church will journey through Lent, Good Friday, and Easter days shaped by repentance, sacrifice, service, and resurrection hope. In this journey, we are invited, again and again, to trust God who clothes the lilies of the field and feeds the birds of the air. Jesus says to us all, “Do not worry about your life… strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” The springtime of the heart is not found in anxious striving, but in resting trust in the faithful care of God our Creator.

As church communities, gathered here and rooted in the life of Bradford on Avon and the Benefice, we are called to live out that trust, not only in prayer and worship, but in generosity of spirit and in care for those in need. This calling is for all of us: to be signs of hope, compassion, and renewal in the places we live and serve.

May this season be for us a true springtime of the heart, in which sorrow is eased, worries are loosened, and hope is renewed. May the Spirit who hovered over the waters breathe new life into us, that we may go forward from here renewed in faith, steadfast in hope, and joyful in God’s love.

Rector of Bradford on Avon Holy Trinity, Westwood and Wingfield

Racial Justice Sunday: 8 February 2026

Love Your Neighbour

Racial Justice Sunday invites us to return to Jesus’ command to love our neighbour, not as a vague statement or sentiment, but as a way of life shaped by faithfulness, courage, and grace. In a world marked by fear, suspicion, and division, particularly towards asylum seekers and refugees, the gospel calls us to listen carefully to voices we can struggle to hear.

The Bible offers a vision of a world where everyone belongs; where each person is loved, valued, and affirmed as made in the image of God. It reminds us that our deepest identity is found not in race, nationality, or background, but in Christ, who calls us brothers, sisters, friends.

The words ‘for such a time as this’ (Esther 4.14) speak gently yet firmly into our moment. Amid competing voices, strong opinions, and public protest, Scripture invites us to examine our hearts and ask how we are being shaped, by fear or by love. At the cross, we see both God’s truth and God’s mercy, drawing us towards reconciliation with God and with one another.

On Racial Justice Sunday – and on every Sunday – we are invited to stand together in love. We commit ourselves to resisting words and actions that diminish others, and to embracing the way of Christ: a way that forms us for unity, compassion, justice, and hope.

Exciting News !

After an inspiring, moving and well attended licensing service in Holy Trinity, Rev’d Jenny Nelson says, “it is a great honour to respond to God’s call to serve as Rector of the Benefice of Bradford on Avon Holy Trinity, Westwood and Wingfield. Having lived and served in Wiltshire for many years, coming to Bradford on Avon and its surrounding villages is like returning home, and it is a wonderful privilege to be given the opportunity to work collaboratively, with compassion, energy, and parity, for all to flourish. I hope that with God’s grace we will answer God’s call, making Jesus known inside and outside of our church buildings, inviting others to “come and see.”

Bring others with you.

“Come and see! You will always be warmly welcomed.”

We look forward to seeing you soon.
